Your first hour in Georgia is easier when the phone and the ride are already planned. Use airport Wi-Fi if necessary, buy a registered local SIM or eSIM from an official operator, and compare a Bolt or Maxim quote before accepting an unsolicited taxi. Then use rail, buses, drivers and rentals for the journeys each one handles best.

Choose the arrival airport by total journey

The useful question is what happens after landing
ArrivalGood whenConfirm before booking
Batumi (BUS)A seasonal/direct flight fits and you want a coastal transferFlight date, baggage, late arrival transfer
Kutaisi (KUT)A low-cost route fits and western Georgia is the focusBus/rail connection, shuttle, arrival time
Tbilisi (TBS)The capital is part of the trip or flights are much betterLong onward rail/road leg and overnight margin

Cheap taxis without bargaining

Bolt and Maxim show a price before you confirm, keep the pickup and trip in the app, and reduce the need to negotiate. Bolt operates in several Georgian cities; Maxim lists Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Poti, Ozurgeti, Kobuleti and many other centres. Coverage and waiting time still vary, and neither service should be promised for every village or mountain road.

An app quote can be dramatically cheaper than an unsolicited tourist quote, especially around an airport, but it is not a fixed national discount. Demand, traffic, weather, vehicle class and distance change the live price. Compare both apps when practical, confirm the pickup pin, match the plate and driver, and share the trip details with your group.

  • Order inside the official app; do not enter a car merely because someone outside says they are your app driver.
  • Choose card or cash in the app, then follow the payment method shown on the confirmed booking.
  • For Ureki or a remote return, ask the host or driver about pickup availability before you become stranded.
  • For mountain roads, luggage, child seats or a multi-stop day, a pre-arranged suitable vehicle may be better than the cheapest city category.

Your first hour: local SIM, data and a confirmed ride

  1. Before departure, install Bolt, Maxim and the app of the operator you are most likely to use; save the cottage address and arrival details offline.
  2. After landing, connect to official airport Wi-Fi if available. Ignore pressure from unsolicited drivers while you compare your options.
  3. Use a branded Magti, Silknet or Cellfie operator desk or a city service centre. Bring your passport or accepted identity document because the number must be registered.
  4. Ask staff to write down the complete price: physical SIM or eSIM, package contents, validity, activation and whether it renews automatically. A ‘free SIM’ normally means the plastic card is included with a paid package—not free mobile service.
  5. Before leaving the counter, test mobile data, receive an SMS, install the operator app, check the balance and save the support number.
  6. Enter the exact destination in Bolt or Maxim, compare the displayed quote, verify the plate and driver, then share the ride details.

GEL is the amount you pay; USD figures are approximate using the National Bank of Georgia's indicative rate on the check date. Your bank or card rate can differ. Silknet also publishes tourist and unlimited offers, but its currently accessible official page does not expose a reliable price table, so check MySilknet or ask staff for the live total.

Rail, drivers, rentals and marshrutkas

Rail is comfortable when its timetable and stop match your day. Buy from the official railway channel, enter passenger ID details exactly, and carry the required document.

A private driver makes sense for families, luggage, late arrivals and multi-stop days. Agree route, waiting time, child-seat needs, vehicle type, total price and payment before departure. In Tbilisi, the municipal fare currently gives 90 minutes of integrated metro, bus, minibus and Bagebi ropeway travel for GEL 1; verify the current fare and accepted payment card before relying on it.

  • Rental car: inspect tyres, lights, spare and insurance; avoid unfamiliar mountain roads after dark.
  • Marshrutka: useful and inexpensive, but pickup, space and timing can be informal—ask locally on the same day.
  • App taxi: verify plate, driver and seatbelts before moving.
  • Mountain route: use the vehicle and driver the road actually requires.

The five-message booking method

  1. Send exact date, arrival number and scheduled landing or train time.
  2. State passenger count, luggage and child-seat requirements.
  3. Ask for the exact pickup point, vehicle and full price in GEL.
  4. Confirm who waits if the flight or train is delayed.
  5. Save the driver's contact and the cottage location offline.
